A Little MS with a Little MSW

A Mid-Life Slant on Disability and Education

Running

I used to run. Kind of. I have participated in a handful of 5Ks and one half marathon. Lately, I’ve been thinking about picking up running again. The problem is I have not done much exercise at all for the last year and a half. My goal is to run a 5K this fall. Well, my ultimate goal is to run a 5K, but I realize that I must be able to walk one first; alas, if this goal is to be realized, it will have to be so with the use of baby steps.

Step One: I bought my first pair of running shoes in YEARS the other day (got a student discount, too)! They are Asics. I’ve never owned a pair of Asics (or typed that word, apparently, because it does not look like a word to me). I have taken them out on a couple errands and a few walks, and so far, so good!

Step Two: Walking. I have been walking approximately every other day and have recently decided to increase my distance slightly each time. Two days ago, I walked 1.25 miles – and this very blog – as I live, breathe, and type- represents my whole-hearted procrastination of the mile and a half walk impatiently awaiting me this morning.

Step Three: Implement one of those “Couch-to-5K” type deals. You know, the walk-run intervals that help even the most committed couch potatoes gasp, pant, and curse their way through 3.1 miles before collapsing back on their couches. Speaking of couches, we bought the BEST modular couch recently (Albany Park, Kova Modern Modular Sectional Sofa – Cloud-Soft Comfort | Albany Park).

Oh, I’m a little ADHD. It’s probably best you know that up front, dear reader. It won’t make your reading experience any more “on-topic” but it will make each blog post a bit like the surprise grab bags of your youth. Straight up Gump style…”you never know what you’re gonna get!”

Well, I’m off to walk a little closer to my goal.

About Me

I have Clinically Isolated Syndrome. It’s like MS without the ‘multiple’ part. My brain has one sclerosis. Sclerosi? Anyway, it’s a doozy. I am also a therapist working toward independent clinical social work licensure. I have a husband, two adult children, and two poodles. I love to read, write, and exercise. I strive to eat something green and to make someone smile every day!
