A Little MS with a Little MSW

A Mid-Life Slant on Disability and Education

Take a Hike

We recently purchased a State Park pass, fueled by the bright idea to become regular hikers. I love nature, and being out in nature, but when I take my two left feet out on a trail littered with rocks and roots, bloodshed and broken bones are predicted by psychics far and wide. Two gifts not bestowed upon me at birth were those of gab and grace – and I’ve accepted both. Take me on a group hike and I’ll be the one bringing up the rear, miming a faceplant.

The trail we embarked upon last weekend was straight uphill for the first 902 miles. We finally reached a straightaway where I could really focus on my lungs’ deficiencies and my heart’s overzealousness. That’s when I tripped on air. Easiest part of the trail and I decided that to be the perfect moment to kiss the dirt. My husband was behind me and got to witness it all. Not my sexiest moment.

My husband would say this is all ‘a part of my charm.’ I like that he finds my clumsy, awkwardness charming. It helps me to reframe my insecurities when I find myself face down in the dirt. It helps me to stand back up, brush myself off, and keep on hikin’…

About Me

I have Clinically Isolated Syndrome. It’s like MS without the ‘multiple’ part. My brain has one sclerosis. Sclerosi? Anyway, it’s a doozy. I am also a therapist working toward independent clinical social work licensure. I have a husband, two adult children, and two poodles. I love to read, write, and exercise. I strive to eat something green and to make someone smile every day!
