A Little MS with a Little MSW

A Mid-Life Slant on Disability and Education

A Little Green, A Little Processed

My grocery cart is the one that contains pop tarts and asparagus, Nutella and broccoli. I have a wide palette and I am not one to deny myself a treat from time to time. From this standpoint, I do think ‘you are what you eat.’

I am as diverse as my diet. I am reliable yet scattered, caring yet distant, passionate yet guarded. I am the culmination of nearly half a century of lived experience and I strive for progress, not perfection.

I know the benefits of clean eating, but life is messy. Some days (and some people) pair best with a bottle of vodka and an entire cake. Imagine assigning a food to all the people in your life. We’ve all met a Broccoli Floret. I’ve been compared to a Sour Patch Kid a time or two. Hey, what can I say: no one can be sweet ALL the time.

I think we as humans have achieved self-actualization when we can be compared to a banana split: colorful, sweet, and nutty, with a healthy cherry on top! Broccoli is Beautiful, but there is just something about the diversity of the banana split that reminds us that there is a whole menu of experiences outside of the ingredients with which we most identify.

How many times have you heard oil and water don’t mix? While that may be true, as you go forth into the world, I challenge you to remember that oil and water often come together in the same recipe to captivate the tastebuds of people from around the world. Maybe we can’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the honeys and the lemons of the world are frequently summoned by tea lovers far and wide to add their unique twist to this universally known beverage.

About Me

I have Clinically Isolated Syndrome. It’s like MS without the ‘multiple’ part. My brain has one sclerosis. Sclerosi? Anyway, it’s a doozy. I am also a therapist working toward independent clinical social work licensure. I have a husband, two adult children, and two poodles. I love to read, write, and exercise. I strive to eat something green and to make someone smile every day!
