A Little MS with a Little MSW

A Mid-Life Slant on Disability and Education

Professionalism

Ok, let’s get this straight up front: I am not asking you to like everyone, to be a doormat, a kiss-ass, or a sickly-sweet, fake, knock-off brand of genuine. However. Tact is a real thing, and it can take us a long way in life if we can learn how to walk the tight rope of wanting to punch someone in the face vs. actually punching someone in the face.

For some folks, there is no rope. They live off-course with no intent or desire to play by the rules of decorum. Society tends to make excuses for these folks. We say things like, “oh, that’s just So-and-So…” I am certainly guilty of making such excuses for others’ rude behavior.

The thing is, physiologically, there is no such thing as “no filter.” It’s called a prefrontal cortex. People who tend to blurt things, without consideration for their audience, are not lacking a filter, they are lacking maturity and self-control. I have heard such individuals make comments like “I’m just saying what everyone else is thinking…”

Maybe. Probably.

HOWEVER.

About Me

I have Clinically Isolated Syndrome. It’s like MS without the ‘multiple’ part. My brain has one sclerosis. Sclerosi? Anyway, it’s a doozy. I am also a therapist working toward independent clinical social work licensure. I have a husband, two adult children, and two poodles. I love to read, write, and exercise. I strive to eat something green and to make someone smile every day!
