Mind and mood-altering substances have often been cited as a favorite among our creative elites, past and present. Now, I am certainly not saying that allowing creative juices to flow while under the influence guarantees stardom. Hell, I am not even saying that talent guarantees stardom. We all know of those individuals who are where they are because mommy, daddy, or Uncle John laid the groundwork before them.
We also know of those individuals with mind-blowing talent tucked in the crevices of community theaters, art galleries, and unpublished pages around the globe. Those who create for the love of the craft. Sober, inebriated, lauded or not – it does not matter. The one strength these creatives possess is the ability to dig deep within themselves, and in doing so, touch the depths of others.
In a society that thrives at surface level, those who shine brightest exploring the depths of human existence are often overlooked and undervalued, save for the sporadic standing ovations and rainy day museum strolls where the shallow and deep collide, albeit briefly.
